A graphic of the details of the NRFC's investment in Quantum Brilliance.

The NRFC has made a $13 million investment in Quantum Brilliance (QB) as part of the company’s Series A funding round. QB will use the NRFC’s investment to create a quantum diamond foundry in Australia.

The quantum diamond foundry, the first of its kind in the world, will accelerate the design and fabrication of quantum diamond devices, which will enhance local capability in the emerging quantum technology sector, helping to expand a burgeoning local diamond quantum industry.

About Quantum Brilliance

Quantum Brilliance (QB) is a quantum technology company, specialising in the fabrication of quantum diamonds, and the design, development, and manufacture of mass deployable diamond quantum devices that operate at room temperature, eliminating the need for large, expensive, and energy-intensive infrastructure. QB’s quantum computing hardware is manufactured at its facility in the ACT.

Founded in 2019 and grown out of research conducted at the Australian National University, QB is a global leader in diamond quantum technology with expertise in advanced materials design and fabrication, diamond quantum devices, and quantum software and algorithms. QB's mission is to enable the mass deployment of quantum technology, facilitating its integration into everyday devices and high-performance computing systems.

Investment impact

Transforming industry

QB’s technology has significant potential as a platform for quantum sensing and computing technologies, with their small size, light weight and ability to function at room temperature, giving them a significant advantage over other quantum technologies in specific applications. These applications include potential uses in sectors such as national security, aerospace, healthcare, transport, civil engineering, and mining industries.

Domestic production will build local capabilities in quantum diamond technology, laying the foundation for a robust national quantum industry, and positioning Australia as a world leader in the development of quantum technologies.

Commercialising Australian innovation

The intellectual property underpinning the technology to be used in QB’s quantum diamond foundry was developed at the Australian National University, La Trobe University, and RMIT University.

QB has a significant commercial opportunity in the provision of essential quantum technology components to local and international hardware manufacturers.

Supply chain resilience

QB’s quantum diamond foundry will enable the local production of quantum diamonds, strengthening Australia’s domestic supply chain with a critical component for small form factor quantum hardware. This sovereign capability enhances supply chain resilience by facilitating large-scale supply for a broadening range of quantum technology applications.

The expanding range of applications for quantum diamonds holds significant potential to deliver wide-reaching benefits across numerous Australian industries.

Attracting private finance

The NRFC’s investment in QB’s Series A funding round positions the company to attract further capital from domestic and international private investors. This backing strengthens investor confidence in QB, paving the way for future funding rounds by providing QB with the runway to validate its technology and scale its execution capabilities.
